Michael Harte

Michael joined Barclays as Chief Operations and Technology Officer on 14 July 2014. Reporting to Group Chief Executive, Michael is a member of the Group's Executive Committee.

As an advocate of open systems, standardised and lean processes, Michael is always looking at applicable technologies and services to meet the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead for customers and the finance industry. He has a wealth of experience in business strategy and driving world-class operational and service excellence.

Before joining Barclays, Michael was Group Executive of Enterprise Services and Chief Information Officer at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia Group (CBA), where he was responsible for group-wide retail and institutional banking systems and operations, brokerage, wealth and asset management systems. Together with his team, Michael transformed CBA into one of the most respected, customer focused and technology leading banks in the world: one of only 8 AA rated banks and top ten by market capitalisation.

Lean process capability in itself led to 6% year on year productivity uplift, driving CBA to have one of the best cost to income ratios globally.

In his earlier career, Michael held the posts of Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, IT and Operations and Technology posts at PNC Financial Services (2001-2006, New York) and at Citigroup (1996-2001, London and New York).

Educated in New Zealand, Michael then went on to complete his Masters degree in Systems Management (with distinction) at New York University.

Michael has an on-going relationship with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to create advantage through open systems, information and enterprise architectures for business value.
